Don't use avirecompress at all.

avirecompress is not exactly heavily developed any more.....

Use avidemux http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ for editing your avis, it works 
fine for me and for avicap/avirec generated files.

It's the subjectively 'best' VirtualDub-replacement I could find ;-)

I won't develop avirecompress any more (not since I found avidemux), dunno 
about Kabis opinion there.

Use avidemux for editing avis, and dvd::rip for dvd transcoding, that's what I 
do
