Maybe the gcc you're using has problems with your processor - only guessing?
Try to compile for a different processor with -mcpu=i386 -march=i386 or so?
Or try using a newer gcc?

If you can tell us exactly which is the last version of avifile that works and
which is the first that doesn't, then we might solve that problem
