Did you recompile avifile after you compiled/installled the older xvid/divx
versions?
Did it work for you before - with older versions of avifile, with older
versions of divx/xvid?
If it worked once - with which versions?
Or did it never ever work?
If it still crashes, compile with --enable-debug, and send us the gdb output
including backtrace etc
