I guys !
the smoothing setting does not affect the numbers of poly, so it won't
change nothing until you tell him to subdivide them to fit with the
smooth effect : then you will simply increase the number of polygons,
and this will affect away3D for sure ...

smoothing is more a kind of filter for the render :

Rob : the idea would be to affect a phong by default when smoothed in
3ds, but smoothing can be applied to faces groups and objects, this
seems complicated  (I mean more than just create a phong shader)
