Could you explain (or even better: show) the artifacts? Sorting issues, disappearing triangles, .. ? Increasing the poly-count is usually a bad idea in case of BSP, as it does only that: increase the polycount (which due to the bsp construction process often results in more than linear increase), and it can only make the build slower while not helping with the final result. Best thing to do is keep the polycount as low as possible. Artefacts are always the cause of something else :)
