Uhm, correct me if I'm wrong, but you need a composite manager like xcompmgr to
make this work with xrender. Plus this only provides transparency. If you click
in the transparent area, the wibox will still receive that click.

The SHAPE extension doesn't need any running manager and it handles input
regions more nicely (SHAPE 1.1 even adds an explicit "input region" for this
while 1.0 only has the "clipping region" and the "bounding region").

Oh and the main argument: I already got some basic understand of how this can be
done with SHAPE and the code even seems to work! ;)
