My guess is that the "gtk part" wanted "real" transparancy, as in
looking through multiple layers of windows. What xrender blending can
give you is something with an alpha channel. Interaction between
multiple clients cannot be done by a client, so that indeed requires a
compositing manager. Sorry if I caused confusion. I just checked and i
think xshape works by making lots of rects and just clipping
everything when rendering, which would explain the 1 bit pixmap.
