Uhm, ok, got any example code on this?

When I first started digging into this, someone gave me a link to some example
which used gtk and cairo. It drew a red semi-transparent circle with a
completely transparent rest of the window. This example didn't work without a
running composite manager which is why I assumed that the xrender magic to do
this always required a composite manager. Oh and this didn't have the nice event
propagation I mentioned either..

(xtrace on this example app afaik only showed xrender stuff)

Now feel free to show me that I'm completely wrong. ;)
