One of the things which impresses people constantly when I show Awesome is the way tags work more akin to layers in photoshop or gimp than to ~standard~ virtual desktops. I must confess that it's also my favourite feature. Another thing that impresses is the ability to work both, as a standard WM with floating windows and as a very good tiling WM. This is particularly impressive if you have a dual head setup, as one screen can be tiled while the other one can be floating at the same time.
