I second what you say Augusta. I have cases in my family tree where children
shared NO surnames with either parent. My 4th G grandfather was Antonio Caetano
de Vasconcellos. His parents were Antonio Pimentel Velho (end of line) and Anna
Pimentel. None of Anna's grandparent's were Vasconcellos (or even) Pimentel
(another end of line).
What is even more interesting is that in my research, I discovered a second
cousin of my paternal grandfather Francisco Vitorino de Vasconcellos by the
name of Anna Laureana de Vasconcellos. Neither of her parents were
Vasconcellos, nor were there any Vasconcellos in the previous 6 generations. She
is, interestingly, a descendant of the sister of my 5th G grandmother Anna
Pimentel!! My theorey is that somewhere back up that Pimentel line there is a
Vasconcellos. Unfortunately, I have found no records to prove it, nor I'm
likely to. Oh to have  time machine!!!

P.S.  You've got to keep on your toes with this research....even different
siblings (of the same parents) took (or were given) different family name
combinations !!

The
resa:

I know the first  names of this couple match and also the locations and the
years...  but in my head, I just can't believe that Antonio Jose de Lima's
grandfather and great grandfathers had another last name, that they were not de
Lima's.    I have to find those certificates.

This is the first time I've researched an ancestor this far back, so who
knows; anything is possible.  I would just be shocked.  (I don't know why;
maybe it's because then we wouldn't really know where the last name came from.
Well, I know it came from his mother, Marianna's line.  But why would he not
take the last name of the father?  Isn't that odd?

Why would Antonio Jose de Lima's, b 1803 be a de Lima from his mother's side
and not his father.   I have to try to find some certificate  with his father's
last name, the Francisco Jose who was married to Marianna Joaquina de Lima.  I
know they named their son, Antonio,  after her father, Antonio.

You seem so certain; probably because you've been at this for a long time and
perhaps you've seen this before?

Warm regards,

Maria Elena

Dear Theresa:

I am sending this from my office, so I dare not send it to the list. The
Commissioner would not be happy with all the replies from something called the
Azores List.

Please pass this info onto Maria Lima; I've found another child of Francisco
José and Engrácia Rosa getting married in S. José. Notice the connection to
Santa Maria:
