When I went to visit my new found cousins in Lisbon 2 years ago all the male cousins told me I was a very strong willed American woman. Much to their dismay, I told them my mother and 4 sisters were also. When I told one of them that I took vacations without my husband, with his blessing- thank you, you could have heard a pin drop. He said his wife would never travel alone....personally, I think he thought she would never come back. The women in the family did drive and have cars, however. Almost every single one of these cousins has a PhD including the women. I think they almost passed out when I paid the dinner bill for all 27 of us....I think they expected my husband to do this. Such fun!
