Les, Arriving in Providence RI, June 28,1914, on the ship Germania, sailing from Angra de Heroismo, Terceira, June 20, is a Francisco Silveira Borges, 21, last address Velas, Sao Jorge, his father is Manuel Borges, Velas, Sao Jorge, and he is going to his brother, first they had his friend, then they crossed it off and put in brother (could be brother in law?) Abel S. Freitas, 51 Shores? St., Taunton, MA, then written above it says sister Maria Silveira Freitas going to Taunton, here it says he was born in Velas, Sao Jorge. I'm a little confused by this as you say your mom was born in Sao Jorge in 1915.
Maria and Abel Sousa Freitas visited the Azores in April 1953, coming via Pan American Airways, Santa Maria Island to Boston MA. It gives their Passport Numbers as 592283 (both on the same passport). In the 1910 Taunton directory, there is an Abel Freitas, combwinder, living at 106 Briggs St., Taunton. There are also an Antonio, Joao and 2 Manuel Freitas living in Taunton in 1910 directory. In the 1912 Taunton directory, there is an Abel Freitas, silkweaver, living at 38 School St., there is also a John Freitas at 398 Winthrop. In New Bedford 1920's directories, there is an Abel Freitas with a wife Mary V. living in New Bedford. WWII Draft Registration record: Abel Souza Freitas, living in Stonington, CT. His mailing address is Westerly RI. His wife is Mary. It says he was born June 4, 1885, Sao Jorge, Azores. There were quite a few Portuguese families who settled in Stonington CT. I have an extended family member still living there. So far I have not been able to find him on the WWI Draft Registration records, maybe he returned to the Azores again? This is what I have been able to find so far. "E" Elaine --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected].
