Hi Rick, Maybe it's an alcunha? Are there any other Costas around your ancestor's record in that same handwriting so you can compare the word Costa? I don't think it ends in an "a" though. Look at the "a" on the end of Rosa, Fortunta, Maria, etc. I think it ends in "to" and possibly "oto." Couto came to mind, but that doesn't look right for the 2nd letter.
