Looks like Couto to me. It is common enough in Ribeira Grande. It is not unusual for a certain priest to write certain last names in a manner that may look like another name. It should be easy enough to check. Just look up any adjacent marriages with Costa name or the marriage of the grandparents and your answer will be there. Sometimes Couto is recorded as Coito, as well.
