Greetings All,
When I was in CA for the June 2009 Portuguese Festival in San Jose, my former
Portuguese Professor, Dr. Heraldo Da Silva (Professor Emeritus, SJSU), gave me
a newly publisdhed book on the Azore Islands called "Azores:  Nine Islands, One
History" by Susana Goulart Costa, Institute of Governmental Studies, UC
Berkeley.  It's in both Portuguese and English.  ISBN978-0-9819336-0-3.

Antonio and Maria's story book sounds fascinating, Celeste.  Thanks for the tip!
Guida

Hi Ben,
I agree with John that the Guill book is probably the best; however, it is
out of print and quite costly if you can find a used one.
I recently re-read a book that is not really intended to be a history of the
Azores.  What I discovered as I now read it, for many of us it gives a good
idea of WHY our ancestors may have left the Azores.  The book is, "A quest for
the Story of Antonio and Maria from the Azores to Washington township," by
Doris Machado Van Scoy.
About the author on the back cover:  "Doris Machado Van Scoy, a present
resident of Los Altos, has lived and worked most of her life in Washington
Township--now largely the City of Fremont, California.  As a child and third
generation descendant of four Azorean-Portuguese immigrants, she was raised
with the rick legacy of Azorean famiy values.  As an adult and graduate of the
University of California at Berkeley, she returned to her native Washington
Township to teach high school, marry and raise her two children.
"Retirement after 26 years of teaching brought with it the opportunity to
pursue her lifelong passion to critically examine and untimately put into print
1) the story of the Azorean-Portuguese immigration to California and 2) the
cultural hearitage the early settlers brought with them.
"Motivated by the absence of written material on these subjects, coupled
with a strong desire to ensure the Azorean's place in California history, she
has pieced together historical fact, testimony, and recollections to re-create
the lives the 19th century journey of Antonio and Maria, her paternal
grandparents.  In this three-part documented narrative blending essay,
fictionalized biography, and memoir, she captures the essence of the Azorean
legacy."
I found a used copy on line for under $20.00.

All,

Does anyone have a good book on the history of the Azores that they could
recommend?  I haven't been able to find anything on Amazon that looks like it
would be worth purchasing.  Also, has anyone read Saudades da Terra, and if so
was it good and is there an English translation?

Thanks,

Ben
I've read Saudades da Terra; it is value is not literary but historical and
genealogical.
There was an English translation of Volume IV, Book 1, by Edna Phillips Kerns;
I do not know if it is still available. The translation might be considered
amaturish or worse by some, but it is the only English translation ever made
available and is invaluable to people searching for S. Miguel ancestors. The
best history of the Azores in English is still the book by the late james
Guill. (Guill, James H. A History of the Azores. Golden Shield International,
Tulare: 1993.)
