Hi Charlotte,

I just wanted to let you know I am still looking at Estrela records of
Jose Tavares Ferreira. I was at the FHC on Saturday and was looking for
the marriage I looked from 1880 to 1870 and did not find it there but I
need to continue and try the records 1870 to 1860 which I am now
convinced it the right time. In re-looking at the passport records I am
sure Maria was 11 years old when they left the Acores. So that would
mean she was born around 1870. I hope to get back to the FHC this week
and continue looking. I will keep you posted.

Hi Charlotte,

Well that explains why I could not find the birth in Estrela. It looks
like I will have to find the birth of Maria and or the marriage which I
have good reason to believe is in Estrela. If Maria was 11 and they were
33 & 38 then that means they most likely married when they were 22 and
27 which is in the range when most marriages took place in the Acores.
It should not be difficult finding them.

Another thing infant mortality was high back then they may have had
other children that died. And I have records of woman having children
well into their 40's.

I rechecked the birth date for Joseph Tavares

Ferreira and it was Feb. 22, 1882. So he must have been born in Hawaii
and not the Azores. He did have an older sister Mary ( Maria) but I do
not think she would have been 11 years older. It made me wonder if there
might have been other children that they left behind as 33 and 38 seem
rather old to be starting families. Thank you again for your help. Aloha

Hi Charlotte,

I hope to get back to the FHC next week and look some more, the record
has to be there. As for as only three traveling in the party and the
name Manuel I just looked at the record again and this morning I see it
is Maria (they used an abbreviation when I first looked at it I thought
it was Manuel). Also it has her as 11 years old not 11 months. Perhaps
your grandfather was considered a baby in arms and not counted. I will
see if I can find her birth.

I will let you know when I find some more.

Thank you so much! I have not been able to find out any info. I do not
know anything about a Manuel. Grandpa had a brother John and a sister.
Grandpa was about 3 when he arrived here. Thank you so much. Any other
info. would be appreciated.

Hello Charlotte,

I finally have time to do some research and I looked at the Ribeira
Grande records today to try and find your family. I spent most of the
time looking for the birth of a Jose born Feb 22 1879 but came up empty.

What I have found tonight is the passport record of your great
grandfather Jose Tavares Ferreira, the link below should take you to the
CCA site and the record It is image 00000066. From what I was able to
read it has a date of 23 Apr 1881, Jose Tavares Ferreira son of Jose
Tavares Ferreira and Joanna Maria., age 38, married from Ribeira Grande
NS Estrela, a stone mason, wife's name Maria Augusta, age 33, and it
looks like Manuel 11 months Just 3 traveled in the party. It also has
the ship Suffok.

When I get back to the FHC I am going to see if I can find the birth of
Manuel.
