Hi, Linda, My first Azorean forebearers to emmigrate - José Antonio Raposo and Maria Thereza do Nascimento - arrived in Rio de Janeiro nearly in 1808. Since they were from São Miguel (Ponta Delgada/Arrifes), there may well be a connection with the José Raposo mentioned in your post.
I have been trying to discover not only the genealogy of my family, but its history altogether, so anything on the Raposos of São Miguel will be of interest to me. Take, for example, the fact that my family lived for 3 generations in the nearest vicinity of the church of the Divine Holy Ghost here in Rio. That's a very Azorean thing to do, isn't it? Marcos.
