Katharine and Eric,

My great grandfather was Francisco Jose Jorge (1871 - 1963) and he immigrated
to the US in 1889 settling in Merced in the Buhach Colony. He was the son of
Antonio Jose Jorge and Ana de Jesus. Francisco's daughter, Marie E George
married Edwin W Rodrigues, grandson of Mary Silveira Matos Enos (1883-1978).
The Jorge and Enos famlies were neighbors in the Buhach Colony. Edwin's father
died in the Spanish flu epidemic (abt 1918) and was raised by his grandparents
in Merced.

I knew that the Jorge family was from Faja Grande, Flores from listening to
conversations as a child. From census records, I assumed that Mary Silveira
Matos Enos (1883-1978) and Joseph Enos (1877-1956) immigrated from another
Azores island and not Flores.

I can't read Portuguese, but I'd love to find out what the letters say.

Katherine,

I did a project for a George family in the Fremont Hayward area a few years ago
and was never able to identify the immigrant ancestor. They were from the
Azores and arrived before 1860.

I'd be interested in a scan or copy as I have a dozen or more projects
involving Flores families.

Does anyone have info on ANTONIO JOSÉ JORGE and his wife ANNA LUÍZA of
Ponta da Fajã Grande das Flores? They had (at least) two children who
immigrated to Northern California, Frank A. George (b. ca. 1848,
presumably as FRANCISCO JORGE ) and ISABEL THOMAZIA (b. ca. 1854).

In addition, I have over old letters to Isabel in Portuguese from two
nieces and a nephew of hers who stayed behind in Ponta da Fajã Grande:

7 are signed by MARIA MATEUS (or Matheus) SILVEIRA (1913-1938);

8 are signed by ANA FLORIPES (or Floripe or Fluripas) DA SILVEIRA (7
between 1917-1926, plus 1 undated); and,

1 is signed by MANUEL LUÍZ FURTADO (1936).

Additionally, I have an undated letter from JOSÉ ANTÓNIO VALADÃO
(possibly from Flores) and a 1921 letter from ISABEL FURTADO in
Oakland, California.

Does any recognize any of these names?
