Thanks, Eric.  I already have Gomes' "Familias da Ilha das Flores:
Vila das Lajes I parte," while Francisco himself looked up the
marriage lines, then emailed them to me before "Casais" was published
(we met in Horta, through a mutual friend).

I came across the George family whom you mention living in southern
Alameda County in the 19th century in US Census enumerations on
Ancestry.com, and wondered at the time if they were any relation to my
George family.  It's worth bearing in mind that name researchers have
calculated that "Jorge" is the Azorean surname most characteristic to
a single island of any surname in the Azores -- specifically to Pico.
This makes me wonder whether Debra's and my "Jorge" family immigrated
to Flores from Pico (or perhaps they didn't have a surname at all till
at some point when they adopted this one).  All probably lost in the
mists of historym alas...

Erratum: Hemorrhage, not hemorrage.  That's what I get for trying to
