Cheri and Marcio,

Thanks so much for all your help. I've learned a lot in the past few days
thanks to you guys. You are right I'm lucky that I knew what freguesia Joao
Pedro Tavares was born in. I'm fortunate enough that my parents are nearly 80
and still with us. When I started asking questions of my father a few years ago
I realized that he had the key piece of the puzzle. Joao and Maria had 8
children all born in Fall River, Massachusetts. My dad barely remembered his
grandfather because he died when my dad was 8 years old. The one thing he
remembered was that Joao and Maria's youngest child Elvira, my dad's aunt, once
told him that Joao Pedro Tavares was born in Agua de Pau. In 2003 I made plans
to go to St. Michael in the summer of 2004, and found the village on a map. My
dad then wrote a letter to the parish priest, Father Mota, [who has since
died], and he located a second-cousin of my dad, living in Agua de Pau.

Unfortunatly when I went to St. Michael in 2004, the man, Jose Almeida
Tavares, was deceased, but I did meet his wife, Maria Tavares. She invited us
into her home like family. Once I explained who I was she touched my face and
began to cry. She said I had the "face of Tavares" and showed me several old
photos of her husband. I read somewhere in the group postings that the Tavares'
of Agua de Pau are famous for basket making. Well sure enough she gave me a
hand woven picnic basket that her husband made, to take home.

Since then we've returned to St. Michael 3 more times and always visit Mrs.
Tavares. Every Christmas we exchange Christmas cards and photos.

Thanks again for all the help!

Looking for info on my ancestors. My great-grandfather was Joao
Pedro Tavares. He was born in the village of Agua de Pau on the island
of St. Michael, Azores on June 12,1873. His father's name was Jose
Pedro Tavares. His mother's name was Elena Ignocencia do Coracao de
Jesus. He had three brothers. Pedro Tavares, who resided in
Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and Jose and Serafim Tavares who stayed in
the Azores. He immigrated to Fall River, Massachusetts approximately
in 1893. He married Maria Pereira, whom he met in Fall River. She was
born in Warwick, Bermuda. They had 8 children, including my
grandfather, Alfred Tavares, who died when my dad was 2 years old. The
only info I have is mostly from obituaries, and Joao Pedro Tavares'
baptismal record that I located in an old book in the library in St.
Michael a few years ago. I had it translated, and I obtained a lot of
information from this document. I grew up in Fall River, but never
heard a thing about my relatives in Bridgewater. I'd appreciate any
further information. Thanks!
