Cheri, How can I look up their marriage, [Jose Pedro Tavares and Elena Ignocencia do Coracao de Jesus] in the Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores? You said that you found the marriage. I'd love to be able to take a look at that. I'm gonna take your advice and look from 9 months on after the birth of my great grandfather. I'd love to find some info on his brother, Pedro Tavares, who according to Joao's obituary, lived in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. That's about a 30 minute ride from me. Most of my leads come from that obituary from 1940. I assume that Joao and Pedro immigrated to Massachusetts together. Thanks so much for your assistance. Bruce Tavares

Thanks for looking Marcio! Btazz, I'll do this line by line for you. Even though you had it translated, you'll have to learn how to do these. Keywords: Dates (numbers and months), names (they usually jump out at you) - the name of the baby, Joao is preceded by filho legitimato (a daughter is filha legitimata). Just look for the longer slanted letters of f, l, h, l, g about a third of the way down. You'll also learn to pick out the place because you are already holding that roll of film in your hand. So the next baptism you find, post what you have picked out. The more you "translate" the more you will be able to pick out. They follow the same format in this time period. Here's the word list: https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Portuguese_Genealogical_Word_List The paleography (handwriting) is in the same article, scroll down (in 4 parts). 1) On the 30 day of the month of June of the year of 2) 1000 800 70 and 3 in this church Par- 3) ish of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos of Agua de Pau 4) Council of the vila of Lagoa, Diocese of Angra, I bap- 5) tized solemnly an individual of the sex 6) masculine to whom I give the name of Joao, and that he was born (born is hyphenated here) 7) born in this Freguesia, at 3 hours of the afternoon, of the 8) day 12 of the current month and year, son legiti- 9) mate of Jose Pedro Tavares, worker, and of Ele- 10) na Ignocencia do Coracao de Jesus, of the occupation 11) domestic, natives, received (that means married), parishioners, and 12) living on the Travessa do Valle verdo (that's the name of the street) of this 13) Freguesia, grandson paternal of Pedro Tavares and 14) Miguelina de Jesus, and maternal of Joao de Mel- 15) lo Bizarro and Thomazia da Encarnacao. 16) For godfather the Reverend Luciano Fran- 17) cisco de Mederios, curator of this parish and god- 18) mother Maria da Estrella, single, seam- 19) stress, of whom all I know properly... Btazz, this is where I stop translating. I can only loosely translate the rest. It says stuff like it was read back to them and they answered (confirmed) what was written, it was written in duplicate (one book you are reading the other went to the Vatican), if the godparents could read & write, etc. Era ut supra is Latin for "It was as above" or something like that. Then the priest and the witness sign. Now there's 2 different ways you could proceed. You could go over to the marriages (a different format) to build your pedigree from there. However, since you are new to "translating," I would recommend that you go ahead in the film (online images) to March of 1874 in the baptisms (9 months after the birth of Joao). Women are not likely to have have babies 9 months apart, but there is no other reference point to start without missing a baptism of a baby. You'll need the word list so you can recognize the dates. Note: Your Elena may also appear as Helena. I'm not entirely sure (the images are incorrect online - says 1870, 1871, 1872, then back to 1871) but I think Joao was the first baby born to this couple. I did find the marriage so I know which way to tell you to look for the other baptisms. That's why I'm telling you to go forward to March 1874 and look for more babies born to this couple.
