You'll be able to view the records in the archives at Horta up to about 1910. But that probably won't help you much. You might be able to go to Cedros and ask around for anyone who might know of your family. If you don't speak Portuguese, ask for an English speaking taxi driver. If you want his services for 4 hours, ask what he makes in a 4 hour time period and offer him that to take you to Cedros and act as your translator. (Or 6 hours or whatever).
