The new Horta Public Library and Regional Archives opened in April 2008 in a lovely, airy, modern refurbished building (I've been to both the old and the new library facilities there, and the new one's a vast improvement in every way imaginable!). I recall that their hours are roughly 9:30 AM - 7 PM M-F, plus Saturday mornings. The new library is located at 14 Rua Walter Bensaúde (west side of the street), in downtown Horta, i.e., not the sailing section of town.
As of May 2008, only Library staff were still allowed to make photocopies, so you have to mark with a slip of paper each item you want copied, and may have to wait a little while (just arrange never to be in a hurry!). Also, they're probably too short-handed to make copies on Saturday mornings. Library Director Dr. Luís M.P. São Bento speaks excellent English, although his otherwise very kind and helpful staff largely does not. I'd suggest you write to him beforehand to let him know when you're coming as well as to seek his advice re your research topics, in case there's anything he can do to assist. The Director's email address is: [email protected] Boa viagem, Katharine. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected]. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive.
