Design Therapy, There is no "main" airport. There are 3 airports you can fly into from North America: Ponta Delgada (PDL), Lages (it's also an American Air Force base on Terceira) (TER), and Horta on Faial (I don't know that airport code). From any of those airports you can get to any other island via air or boat.
I think you are the only person who can determine what is "best" depending on your circumstances. What are you planning on doing while in the Azores? How long are you staying? How much are you willing to spend? These questions may help focus your decision to determine which back is "best" for your circumstances.
