Hi Rich, That is kind of an open ended question. I would say a lot depends on your experience level and what you want to do with your data and how you want to document your data with sources.
I can only address software for PC's as I have never used a MAC. The most popular software is Family Tree Maker. I am currently using the 2011 version which I find faults with. I had previously used other versions and the one I liked best was the 2006 V16. I have not tried the 2012 version so I am not sure if they fixed the problems. I also have TMG (the Master Genealogist) which I have used on a limited basis. If you are just starting out and this is your first program then you will not be bothered by the learning curb as much if you are going from another program.
