For Elaine, If you are using the same program on different computers (desktop and laptop), you can back up to a flash drive or use Dropbox.
For Rich Silva: There is no "best" genealogy software. What you find best or I find best may be two completely different things. The "best" one for you will be the one that matches your needs and goals. The 4 most popular (in alphabetically order) for use on a PC (although a Mac running VMFusion or Parallels can run these as well): Family Tree Maker Legacy Family Tree RootsMagic The Master Genealogist I'll look for a post I made about them later and repost it here. I believe all have demos except Family Tree Maker. Legacy: www.legacyfamilytree.com (download the standard version) RootsMagic: www.rootsmagic.com (I think the "essentials" is free) The Master Genealogist: www.whollygenes.com (free for 30 days) Play around with them a bit and see what you like or dislike about them. There are many other genealogy software programs out there besides the 4 most popular, above. You can find a review here: http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ You can also google "genealogy software programs" and find more that way. There are also some cloud-type software programs. Ancestry.com is one. I think you need a subscription to have your tree housed there, but I'm not entirely sure.
