I prefer Personal Ancestral File, available for free from familysearch.org . It has a Companion that you can buy for about $9, and it has a demo version. I've found that the basic program itself seems to do more. PAF is a real workhorse, particularly useful if you've alot of data to enter, it'll keep any amount of notes, and it does decent reports.

I use Rootsmagic for particularly pretty reports, and Legacy for web sites, and occasionally for other things.

I tried Master Genealogist in 2006. I don't recommend it to anyone. It uses so much computer resources, it froze up on my ca 2002 computer with 500 mb of RAM, which is what most but the newest desktops have. It is unecessarily complex and hard to learn, and I recall it not doing such basics as listing all the children of all the spouses as members of a family unit. The program has a certain fanatical following, but few could love it.

I LEAST recommend Family Tree Maker; it uses great gobs of computer space to do very little. It is perfect for people who just want to compile a photo scrapbook of the most recent three or four generations of the family, without alot of depth, and without any particularly complex family membership, but such people as that wouldn't be on the Azores list; you're already interested in 18th and 19th century ancestors.

Greetings,
I started with using legacy and I still use it. Thanks to a cousin, I now have the family website on tribal pages. It is free up to a certain amount. I have yet to reach that limit point. My cousin has 25,000 names so he pays a small fee. I can put citations on it as well as pictures. My cousin has a family members who served military picture page. It sends out a monthly newsletter and I have a guest password for family as well as my own for editing. It does not do any research, just the info. My back up is a flash drive. I am still pretty new at all this, but for a beginner I really like it. There is a lot out there and it gets confusing to me. I feel what I have now is working for what I am doing. As the tree grows, I will probably need to make changes. It is always a works in progress, just like my garden.

For Elaine,

If you are using the same program on different computers (desktop and laptop), you can back up to a flash drive or use Dropbox.

For Rich Silva:
There is no "best" genealogy software. What you find best or I find best may be two completely different things. The "best" one for you will be the one that matches your needs and goals.

The 4 most popular (in alphabetically order) for use on a PC (although a Mac running VMFusion or Parallels can run these as well):
Family Tree Maker
Legacy Family Tree
RootsMagic
The Master Genealogist

I'll look for a post I made about
