The one line I have not been able to trace is my husband's elusive great grandmother, Marie Catherine Fisher/Fischer was her maiden name according to the records I have found. She married Joseph John Weseley on 2 Dec. 1877 in Chicago, IL by a Henry Wagner, Minister of the Gospel. I have the marriage license. She died 22 Sep 1888 in Chicago, IL. I am currently waiting for her death certificate to arrive but; since it was somewhat shameful to be Indian at that point in our history, I'm not sure if I can believe what it says when it comes to nationality, if it says anything. My husband's father always said they didn't speak much of the Indian heritage because it was not considered a good thing! I have the family in the 1880 census where it says she was born in Indiana of German parents. All of her children were born in Chicago, IL. I have all of their birth records. 1st child's record says the mother's, Mary Fisher's, nationality was Bohemian, birth place is blank. 2nd child's says mother's nationality was Indien (their spelling), birth place is blank. 3rd says nationality Bohemian, no birth place. 4th says nationality Bohemian and birth place: Bohemia. 5th says nationality German, no birth place but; gives mother's name as Merry Tieschen. I just found this one today. Never heard this name before. There are several places in Europe; Austria, Moravia, etc., named Tieschen.. 6th says nationality and birth place: German. Death certificate for #1: don't have Death certificate for #2: don't have Death certificate for #3: don't have Death certificate for #4, says she was born in Indiana Death certificate for #5 says mother was born in Indiana Death certificate for #6 doesn't give birth place of mother I thought I had one other document that said she was Indian but; I haven't been able to locate it. If I were able to figure out what church they attended, do you think there is any chance they would have records that would give her birth information? Records indicate she was born in Germany, Bohemia, Indiana or that is was Indian. A primary source is something that was generated at the the time of the event (a birth off of a birth certificate, a death off of a death certificate). Secondary sources have less weight (the birth date from the death certificate, for example). Technically, a census only puts a particular person in a particular place at a particular time. Other than that, it's more of a secondary source. Send me (off list) a detailed report on her from your genealogy program (b, m, d, all the censuses and kids' stuff). I'll take a look at it this weekend. I'm still in contact with one of the Nat. Amer. guys from our old AOL Chat days. He might be a good resource too.
