Hi,

The names mentioned are Manuel, Rosa and Jose Amaro. The Colonel, Base
Commander of Infantry # 27.

The letter is complete and is standard to form and typical of running into
top margins. The "Father" mentions having gone to see the Commanding
Officer of the Infantry # 27 to see if there was anything he could do but
that all they cared about was that he hadn't shown up and that he was
including a note written by the Officer with the exact wording the doctor
should write de doctor's note to be presented at the Portuguese Consulate
in America and for Manuel to mail the note back by registered mail because
the Father needed it back also.

He also says to Manuel "to present himself in January and to say he was in
America for a short time, did not make any fortune and to please be patient
and do as his father was bidding him to to save himself the embarrassment
at the age of 42 and you will never be your own person again if you don't
do as I'm telling you to do and there's no more to say about this."

Note worthy is the age of 42 he mentions. Army enlistment was at the age
of 20 or 19. Standard serving time would be 2 years. Did he write
backwards, was Manuel 24?

Margaret
