Eric, You are right, Godparents are usually a relative or close friend. In this case, Maria Furtado, was a close friend, not married to any of the Anselmo brothers (8), or Pine (Pinheiro) brother. My Father never referred to her as his Aunt. He also, never mentioned who his God Father was. It is possible that he didn't have a God Father, possible but not likely. The only time she was mentioned is when he gave me her picture. So if I learn the name of the God Father, I would know if it was Maria's husband, or one of the uncle's. If the God Father was Maria's husband, it would be easier to identify her family, living in Pleasanton, or Eden Township, etc. The church has the name of the God Father, if only they will share that info. Since my Father was born in 1912, I don't know how any Anselmo or Pine (Pinheiro) information would be of value when researching for a non relative, Furtado. My original inquiry was if any member may have an ancestor whose name was Maria Furtado, so that I would be able to share her picture with them. Ally In a message dated 11/1/2012 11:49:47 P.M. Ally, St Augustine's is where all my children are baptized, communion etc. On their records there is nothing more than a first and last name of the godparents. I don't think it's likely that the records from 100 years ago are any different. The records for the Diocese of Oakland are kept at St Patricks Seminary in Menlo Park. You can make appointments to research there. It could be a lot of effort to find the same thing you already know. I'd try a different approach. Godparents are usually the parents family members or close family friends. Look at all the parents siblings, grandparents etc The most important information for this search is missing. You never stated you father's name, or his parents names, where they came from or when they arrived in the US. Do you recall the old adobe home on Foothill Road? We drove by it all the time when I was a child, and my Father always said that it was the "Alamo". I got into an argument with my 4th grade teacher, I thought he was the stupidest person alive, to think that the Alamo was fought in Texas! My Father had a unique since of humor..... As soon as the church answers my letter, maybe we will know more. And that will depend on if it was her husband who was his God Father. Ally In a message dated 11/1/2012 1:46:02 P.M. Do you have any other records or stories that tie her to Pleasanton. None of my childrens godparents live in the county. My 2nd great grandmother, Ana Furtado Jorge do Souto, was married in San Mateo County and other than that information I have no other connections to her Furtado's. It wasn't until I met a cousin online who lives Texas who happened to additional information from her grandmother about our mutual 2nd great grandmother and provided me with her full last name of Furtado Jorge do Souto. Once I had this, everything fell into place. As I mentioned in my earlier post I've traced this line as far back as I can in the village of Salao, Faial, Azores. The only place I currently have a stumbling block is from the Azores her to the USA to the time she married. Good luck on your search, Robin Borba Besotes On Tuesday, October 30, 2012 11:41:43 AM UTC-7, Ally wrote: Robin ~ Sorry to answer you so late. We had carpet laid and I had to empty two rooms of pure junk collection! I'm having a field day tossing, sorting, and donating.....and then I found this picture..... The only info that I have, is her name is Maria Furtado, and she was my Father's Godmother. So, that would be her married name. The picture is WWII era, maybe 1942. She would be at least 30 years older than my Father. By looking at the picture she is in her 60's or 70's. My Father was born in 1912, in Pleasanton. So I'm guessing that his christening was soon after his birth. I'm not finding anything of her in Pleasanton. There is a Mary, but she would be way too young to fit this picture. The Furtado family that I'm trying to locate, would have lived in Pleasanton between 1900 and 1960. So far no luck. But I have written the Catholic Church in Pleasanton and hoping they will give me his name. I'll let you know what I find.
