Manuel Costa, I hate to contradict everyone before, but they are only right for any certificate applying up to 1913. The 'Registo Civil' is simply unable to provide a certificate for a book that they no longer have. If the books are from 1900, they'll be in the Public Library of Ponta Delgada, and they are the only ones that can provide a certificate of their authenticity. Their contacts are here: http://213.58.174.38:8317/contactos/. You'll need to add '+351' to the phone numbers.
