Hello John,

I had a similar reaction. I thought, wow, that's harsh - my exact words to Helda in private.
For me, I got interested when this Moniz family actually came from Pico, because I figured it was way more likely to have come from Sao Miguel, even though I know plenty from Pico. It took me only 10 minutes to add the family and all ancestors to my database, now going back to the early 1600s. It was for my own benefit and no waste of time, whether or not they were also Helda's people.

In Helda's defense, she said right up front there is a pai incognito involved. She was skeptical from the beginning this was the right person. But with so many people jumping in, it got a life of its own and she can't be blamed for everyone bending over backwards to see who is the most helpful.

Some people ask and get help, but never thank the helper. If that happens to me, that's the end of any help by me to them. But everyone needs to cut beginners some slack and for the benefit of this list, don't slam the door on their faces.

Dear Edgar,

I don't agree with your judgment which seems rather harsh to me.

Speaking only for myself, my work on the list is a pleasant pastime, so the time is not really wasted. In fact, it helps keep the genealogical sleuthing skills sharp. Naturally, if I had been asked to drop everything to help somebody find a relative, only to find that I had been sent on a needless, time consuming  fool's errand because someone had omitted important information, then I would be very annoyed. But that wasn't the case here.

Of course, had I taken Helda on as a client, and worked for a fee, she would have needlessly wasted her money. My time would not have been wasted since I would have been paid for the time spent on the goose chase.

I was impressed at how many people took up the search and how quickly we all got to the bottom of things.

Helda,

If you had posted the information you had when you first posted , you could have saved the many people the hours spent chasing the wrong person.

You do not deserve anymore of our help.
