Thanks Hermano,

You are right I did read too much. I knew the record was different and some
hanky panky was going on. In thinking about it that sui juris I should have
remembered from a record I saw last month. That is twice I have stumbled on it.
As for medidor I looked it up in a dictionary and it said a measure which did
not make sense to me.

This is an unusual record in that the father admitted he was the father. I have
seen only one other record that the father owned up and that was for my 3rd
great grandmother He admitted he was the father when he married her mother.
The strange part was it was his first marriage and that was some 20 years later.

Rick.
You have definetly read too much into the record of her baptism.
Maria daughter of Maria da Estrela, who lives by and through her own means and
of an unknow father, maternal granddaughter of Jose de Arruda and Antonia
Pereira (Panera ?). Born on 14 July 1780 and baptised on 22 July 1780.
Felisberto Caetano, sui juris (who lives by and through his own means) was the
godfather.

Note on the rght margin refers to the father acknowleging her as his daughter:
On 26 April 1798, present in this "Consevatoria" Manuel Moniz da Costa,
"Medidor" (surveyer ?) declared to be the father of the child baptised and that
he hadn'd recognised her as his daughter at the time because he was married to
Maria Pacheco but upon her marriage felt compeled to discarge his conscience,
or something like that ! Maria's (Maria dos Santos) marriage ocurred 3 days
later, but then you know that!
So Maria dos Santos was the daughter of Maria da Estrela and Manuel Moniz da
Costa, who at the time was married to Maria Pacheco
Whoa, enough.
Hope that helps.
Hermano

The bride is described as felha espura and refers to book of baptisms # 29
(Estrela 1776-1782)page 149

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-C-1784-1798/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-C-1784-1798_item1/P182.html
Front side of page 182 (Right side of image)

This is the baptism
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1776-1782/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1776-1782_item1/P151.html
Front side of page 149, lower entry (lower right side of image)

I cannot understand all that is written but it appears that when the bride was
born there was a big to do about it. It does name her mother as Maria da
Estrella they use the word sui juris (I think it means she was under age) and
then names two men Jose de Arruda and Antonio Paxeca (Pacheco). I think she had
relations with both and was unsure who the father was so it names both.

The marriage does name Manuel Moniz da Costa a medidor (I think medidor is like
a guardian or judge) husband of Maria Pacheca. The marriage also names her
mother Maria da Estrella sui juris

Perhaps one of our native speaker can get a better read of what was going on.
