Not everything we read is quite the way we think especially almost 200
years ago,  with a different culture and most especially when we don't keep
it all in context.

The birth record reads the Father appeared before the Priest on April 28th
1798 to say the baptized was his daughter and that he was unable to
"perfilha-la" recognize her because he was already married and he wanted to
make it right (para descargo da sua consciencia).  In this case he was
making honourable restitution to his daughter and her Mother and he did it
the day before her wedding day, which of itself shows the 'drama' behind
the scenes. He may have had to do that under "new pressures" like the
groom's family.   He also was a witness at hi daughter's wedding.  So it
all ties in nicely.
