Rui Goncalves de Medeiros was a peer and a supporter of the Master of Avis. He was made the chief governing officer of the city of Evora after the uprisings that enveloped the city during the beginnings of the Crisis of 1383-85. From Rui are descended many with that name, including a branch that settled on the island of Madeira when it was first colonized. The coat-of- arms: in the shield, there is a red background with five eagles' heads of gold. The crest is a red eagle which extends itself and is rimmed in gold.
