For me, the computer based genealogy software programs enhance the research process, the online cloud-based programs do nothing to help. That's one of the biggest things for me. How many Manuel Silvas do we all have? There's Manuel Silva, our ancestor; his cousin, Manuel Silva (born just a year later); his uncle Manuel Silva; his nephew Manuel Silva, and then there's that *other* Manuel Silva family that we don't think we are related to but we have to keep track of since one of them is Manuel Silva married to Maria da Sousa, just like our Manuel Silva. LOL How do you know which Manuel Silva to pick? With Ancestry, you can search for a name in your tree, but unless you've memorized your Manuel Silva's birth year (or death year), you may pick the wrong one from the list. With Legacy (and other stand alone genealogy software programs), you have other information to help you (and you can customize it to YOUR liking!) [image: image.png]
In the example above, if I don't remember my Maria's birth (or death) date, I can use her parents or 1st spouse to help me pick the correct one. Many of these genealogy software programs have various help groups. The have Facebook groups, videos, webinars, and (gasp!) real, live in-person meetings at a library or genealogical society. I have to drive an hour (each way) to attend mine. I don't go to all of them, but I just make a day out of it, but carpooling with another local. We have lunch, drive there, have the 2 hour meeting and drive home. So many features are available with these types of programs. You can try Legacy and RootsMagic for free. Yes, you need to find the time to sit down and mess around with them. After you pick one, you need to find the time to learn it. I learned as I went along. I did what I needed to do and when I needed something different, I had to go out and learn that. Sure hope someone else comes up with why a stand alone genealogy software program is essential to your research!
