Hi Bill R, I'm going to have to take a guess (or assumption) on some of this. Lots of companies that deal with genealogists like to have the words "family tree" in their title. And the GED acronym comes from GEnealogy Data.
Family Tree (which I will assume is Family Tree Maker) has a GEDCOM export feature. All genealogy programs have this (software for your computer and cloud based with the exception of FamilySearch). For the genealogy programs on your computer, it's generally File>Export and you want to pick GEDCOM 5.5. For Ancestry, follow these directions: https://goo.gl/akRKwP (I typed " ancestry.com create gedcom" so the same search can be performed with My Heritage or Geni). GEDMatch is NOT a genealogy software. It's a third party tool to help analyze your DNA. They just borrowed the GED from GEDCOM. They should have called it DNAMatch if you ask me. But they didn't ask! :) (For the inquiring minds...GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogy Data COMmunication. It was created by the Mormon church back in the 1980s so all genealogy software platforms would have a way to communicate and share data with each other). After you have your GEDCOM file from whichever tree (or wherever it was stored), you'll do a File>Import of your data. Legacy may read directly from some genealogy software programs (PAF, Ancestral Quest, and TMG). Some things will wander in the GEDCOM import and you'll need to fix them. You'll also find out things you may have been entering incorrectly in your previous program. But a clean-up beats re-entering thousands of people!
