Interesting idea - look forward to seeing your gadget :-) I did try to write a prototype which flattened out the front page of news.bbc.co.uk into a big Google News style page. Perhaps I could dig that out and modify the output.
If you have not tried yet, Google gadgets are pretty easy to write.
