Actually I think that this is exactly the way the "new" business models will
work. Recorded music is a relatively very new concept. Court bards of old
got paid for performances and I think that that's the way we're headed back
as the value of a recording approaches zero (distribution cost, not value of
the art). Obviously there will always also be people who want a physical
product so the market for CDs won't dissapear.
But IMO essentially the music industry will have to go back to basics, and
work on a pay per performance model as it has done for most of the last
millenia.
