I'm interested in this as well - offsite backup of backuppc is probably the trickiest part about using it, and we've wrestled with the memory problem here. We ended up just dd/rsync'ing the raw partition to an external drive. Actually, if your script isn't large, perhaps you could send it to the list. When you say it takes a while, how long are we talking, and how much backup data do you have?
