It has been considered.

I doubt anyone uses it - at least, I know about no implementation.

Yup.

Just assign a different name, use a distinct port, and make sure you 
have separate working directories.

I still don't understand that - I never experienced any problems 
there. But then, I've got a MySQL server running anyway, and I (have 
to) change the scripts to create the database, tables and permissions 
anyway...
