The Baha'i Studies Listserv
Dear David,

I think what I said was that I knew a number of men who had successfully
changed from homosexuals to heterosexuals through the power of Christ. They had
all been heterosexual for a long time, one (late middle-aged) as many as 33
years. However, all had been active homosexuals before that.

These guys are in contact with still others in the same situation. All of them
believe that experiencing Jesus Christ as their lord and personal savior was
what made the difference for them. If they feel any momentary temptation to the
'old ways' they interpret this as satan's call which they must resist to save
their souls. 'Gayness' is how satan appears to them, just as greed is how satan
might appear to a banker.

On line I have encountered one non-active gay Baha'i who said for him it was a
choice of priorities - his desires or God's command; his wishes or God's will.
He chose God because he knew he would spend his life in eternity and earthly
life was only the short-haul. Brave guy.

I would take what the American Psychological Association or American
Psychiatric Association say with a considerable amount of salt. Science is not
immune to political correctness - or legal action/threats or internal politics
and arm-twisting.

I do not know the aswer to your question because I have not known any failed
'cures'. I would think that NARTH - despite its boogeyman reputation - is a
good place to start your search.

Best wishes,

Ian

  Subject: Overcoming homosexuality

The Baha'i Studies ListservI read an article in the newspaper a little while
ago on this issue, and it mentioned the American Psychological Association's
position on this. They said there is little evidence that efforts to overcome
homosexuality work, and that people often become suicidal who try.

I remember bringing this subject up here before, and I'm pretty sure it was
Ian Kluge who said he knew of many Baha'is who had successfully changed their
sexual orientation so maybe he can comment. My question then is what was the
difference in approach with people who were successful compared to those who
weren't?

  Regards,
  David
