Thanks Arpan for the suggestions. Here is the belated update on the bike:-

On the following morning, after the bike came back home, I started it and it
did without any hesitation. Choke - I am not using as the cable is stuck.
Earlier, I had the habit of using the choke for each cold start. But that
was till the time that the choke cable was 'old'. As part of 'preventive
maintenance' I had got the cable replaced at Bajaj's Bagga Link workshop.
However, as Bajaj uses highly inferior spare parts for replacement compared
to what comes with the bike as original, the cable barely lasted 3 months
and was jammed thereafter (compared with 4+ years and going strong original
cable till it was changed). Hence no choke till I can get a new cable!

The bike was first driven for some 2- 3 KMs. Then I managed to get some more
confidence and distance went up to 5-6 kms. Now in the last 2 days, the bike
must have run for at least some 150 kms and there seems to be no probs. So I
have understood that some 'clot' must have gone and got held in the main jet
of the carb. Idle jet would have been spared. Hence while idling worked, the
main did not. As the bike stood for the day, the impurity dissolved in the
petrol and the jet opened up once again. Do you think this hypothesis is
correct? I am not even sure whether the Pulsar carb has 2 jets or not!

However, I will do the cleaning as per your suggestions in the next few
days, as soon as there is some spare time available to me. I think, the fuel
tank also would need to be cleaned. Any particular method you would recommed
for that?

Responses to your comments:-
Feels good to solve problems on the pulsar, these days they dont seem
to come by only.

- In my bike they do! Maybe as it is old and beta. Have they resolved all
issues in new Pulsars?

No choke - as mentioned above.

Also, the carb had been cleaned comprehensively only once by the service
centre chaps (Bagga) since 2002. This was done in 2007. After that,
sometimes the fuel tends to overflow from the carb and fall onto
the pavement/floor when the bike is parked for a few hrs. To avoid that, I
close the fuel tap each time I park the bike. Which is the part that I can
replace when open the carb, to check this overflow?

Ciao // Rajeev.

PS:- I have recently changed the 'outer cover' of the speedo console myself
and also got the tyres changed. More on these in mails to come!
