I write to you on behalf of Captain Serf-Edly, with whom you have a quarrel
over a matter of honour. It would be his pleasure to meet you with rapiers
at a time of your choosing, once the army has returned to Paris. As the law
states, and to avoid trouble with my battalion commander, the Commissioner
of Public Safety, the duel will be to first blood only, i.e. the first man
to take injury will be deemed to have lost the argument.
Please advise your preferred date in September as soon as possible, so that
arrangements may be made.
