General le Duc Alain de Mylcandonai, Officer Commanding the 1st Army, to
General le Vicomte Soire de Success, Officer Commanding the 1st Division
Greetings!

PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

General de Success,

Congratulations upon your brevet.

On the subject of General Tishton I can but concur that the sooner he is
removed from the command of the Third Army, the better the Army will be for
it. His performance on the Spanish Frontier was far less than was hoped
for - and would undoubtedly have been worse had he been forced to suffer the
questionable services of the incompetent aide which (through various
string-pullings at Army Headquarters) he managed to foist on _me_!

As you will appreciate, merely holding the Spaniards on the southern
frontier will not suffice. They must be convincingly repulsed if we are to
ensure that the Spanish Netherlands receive no reinforcements. The Commander
of the Third Army must pin down far more troops than General Tishton seems
currently able to do, so please be assured that I will use all possible
influence to ensure his removal from this important command.

Major Zilvain was, as you may know, to have been my aide for the forthcoming
campaign. Unfortunately, it appears that his application to Army HQ was
'mislaid', with the result that I have been saddled with a military and
administrative incompetent having absolutely _no_ command experience
whatsoever (courtesy of General Tishton). Under normal circumstances, the
post would have remained vacant for a month until I could personally find a
suitable replacement [OOC: "If a post becomes vacant unexpectedly (either by
death, resignation or the incumbent being offered a better post) then unless
a PC has applied for it that month (usually by asking the incumbent to
resign), it will remain vacant for one month to allow PCs time to apply for
it."]. It appears, however, that however, that General Tishton is determined
to shine by comparisson with year's other army commanders with a view to
becoming the next Field Marshal - and that Major de Lusby, God Rot Him! is
the means by which he means to do it. I am doing all that I can to remove
the man from my staff - though as the Commander of the First Army I must
take full responsibility for its lacklustre performance this month [OOC:
Threw a 1 :( ] What I find most irksome, as you will appreciate, is that
having foisted de Lusby onto me, Tishton himself is now able to appoint an
aide of far greater ability!

Rest assured that I will do all in my power to support your efforts towards
Tishton's removal. Let me wish you the best of luck in your efforts to
replace him.

General de Mylcandonai

[OOC:

> Joel Halpern asks the GM what influence is required for use with N9
since I did not think there could be two FMs, and he his serving as
and Army Commander (requires a General). I can not actually tell if
this was a promotion, in which case N9 should not still be Army commander
or if something else is going on.]

The situation of Bvt FM npc_KT is _exactly_ the same as that of Bvt Gen SdS,
just one rung higher. Although brevetted to General, SdS' full rank (and
that at which he secured his current appointment) is Lt General.
Consequently, he will be able to retain his current appointment as
Divisional Commander until it runs out in March, if he wishes, despite his
promotion. (He _would_ lose it if he got promoted to full general, but this
can only happen if holds an army command, the securing of which would
require him to resign his Divisional Command in any case).

Similarly, the situation of npc_KT is that, although brevetted to FM, his
full rank (and that at which he secured _his_ current appointment) is
General. Consequently, he will be able to retain his current appointment as
Army Commander until it runs out in March unless influenced to resign. Any
further help you could muster in influencing his resignation would be
useful - hopefully, his brevet to FM will also lapse when he loses his army
command;-)

What appears to happen is that, at the end of the Summer, 'the King' chooses
the FM for the following year from all those army commanders who were
brevetted FM over the Summer Campaign. Hopefully, the precedence followed
with appointments will come into play, as follows:

PCs who have made the die roll successfully (the one who made it by the
most, then by Greasy Pole order).
NPCs (which NPC is chosen by making the same die roll as the PCs and the
highest one gets the post, regardless of whether or not they succeed)
PCs who want the post
PCs who do not want the post.

Cheers,

Paul

P.S. Greg, shouldn't the post of AdM's aide have been kept open for a month
so that he could appoint one? The position of aide to npc_KT certainly seems
to have done....Or will I have to call for and secure de Lusby's resignation
before being able to appoint a successor? ]
