One "gotcha" I've run into is that some OS X updates will replace

No third party should be writing to /usr/bin/ that's waht /usr/local/bin/ is FOR.

That's a nice theory, except for the fact that /usr/local/bin is not in the user's normal path, which presumably is why Bare Bones decided that the bbedit tool should be in /usr/bin (its why we did the same with the interarchy tool).

Unfortunately, sometimes practicalities have to take precedence over theories.

It'd be nice if /usr/local/bin was in the default path.

Obviously, if you're going to be replacing existing utilities, then /usr/local/bin is certainly required to avoid getting stomped by updates, and then you have to worry about the path to ensure you get the right order (/usr/local/bin before /usr/bin).

Enjoy,
