Usually when AppleScript runs out of steam, gets too slow, or starts to become too much like hard work (like having to write your own sort handlers!), I'll turn to newLISP, mainly with BBEdit, which is very good at allowing you to choose the best tool (or your favourite tool) for the job. I used to use Lisp a bit in a previous life, so it was easy to learn.

Perl looks too hard for me, but I'm sure it's easier than it looks... :-)
