Another thought, maybe it was the BBedit list

The 'fi' problem came up some time ago on the list - I don't remember
how it was solved, but its there somewhere

f+i is a single glyph on Mac (that is, Mac OS X draws it as a single
character). This makes be think you've some serious (non
BBEdit-related) mishap in your font setup. If I'm right then you get
the same behaviour in all other Carbon applications.
Try Fontbook first and see if you have corrupted fonts. If all seems
OK, try creating another account in System preferences and see if
the issue persists (and if so, you have a bad problem in your copy
of the OS)
