La,

Font Book did show a bad font. When I tried to delete it I was cautioned that
it was a System Font and I might like to reconsider. I did and didn't delete it.

Since I had two back-up copies of OS 10.4.10 (One on FW and the other a second
internal HD), I booted one of them and sure enough the problem was gone and
Font Book did not show an error.

Need to make something clear. BBEdit is not installed in BooT > Applications.
Rather, it is on a separate partition named Pgms so it is the same BBEdit that
does or does not work when I boot various copies of 10.4.10. The preferences do
change.

I set SuperDuper to erase my boot volume and then copy all files so BBEdit
preferences are identical between the two.

That did not fix the problem i.e., fI (FI) still gives an inverted question
mark.
Font Book says that all fonts are good so that problem was cleared by the
SuperDuper copy.

Typing aaaa in a BBEdit window and then:
View > Text Display > Show Fonts
Still cannot change the size of the aaaa characters.

Preferences > Editor Defaults cannot change the font or font size.

I have Eudora set to Arial for a screen font. It changes to Courier on the
"bad" boot partition. Eudora preferences let me change it from Arial to any
other, but the change has no effect.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Kind Regards,
