Thanks Peter, but something that failed to mention is that Passive FTP is switched off and I have tried it with Passive On (in which case it just doesn't connect - beachball time).

The only workaround I have is to use Fetch to locate the files and then right-click and select 'Edit' to then send the file to BBEdit. I find this method to be cumbersome, even though it does work.

As for hacking the application - not something I'm ready for by a long way :)

cheers,robin

I am working with a new server and the client's ISP has set it up to refuse EPSV (enhanced passive mode or extended passive mode depending on which forum/list-archive we are reading). As a result, I can connect but am never able to get a listing of the contents of any directory I am looking at. The progress window just sits there (until I cancel) indicating "Getting File Listing..."

If the server refuses EPSV, shouldn't it simply fail the command and then BBEdit should (presumably) move on to PASV instead (unless it is perhaps connecting over IPv6?).

A tech guy at the ISP told me that this is because BBEdit's FTP uses EPSV and he hasn't found any way to switch it off either.

One option is to simply open up the BBEdit application file itself, search for EPSV, and bash one of the characters (say to EXSV) so that the command errors properly (this could probably even be done in BBEdit, though a hex editor would be advised). But it will still depend on BBEdit backing off to PASV.

Another obvious option would be to switch off Passive FTP in BBEdit's preferences.

Perhaps some of this will help, although (obviously) I don't use BBEdit's FTP connection (clearly, purchasing Interarchy would be a much better idea! ;).

Enjoy,
   Peter.
